Obituary

William Carl Mathews, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, departed from his earthside home to his forever home in heaven on Friday, May 16, 2025. Born on Thursday, December 4, 1958 in Gideon, Missouri, Carl lived a life defined by kindness, devotion, hard work, and selfless commitment to the ones he held close to his heart.

Carl is the son of the late William Franklin and Mary Edna Frazier Mathews. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Cynthia Gray, Robert Mathews, Ernest Mathews, James Mathews, and Judy Mathews, as well as his cherished grandson, AJ Benavidez.

On February 14, 1981, in Malden, Carl was united in marriage to Vivian Joan Phillips. Together they built a beautiful life, rooted in family and love. A life that he was incredibly proud of. Together they raised four children, Darla (Ben) Brown of Malden; Carl Gene (Arely) Mathews of Corpus Christi, Texas; William F. (Jenna) Mathews of Brookland, Arkansas and Robert D. (Jordan) Mathews of Qulin. His legacy continues through his grandchildren; Aryssa Benavidez, Hannah Brown, Rylie Brown, Ayden Benavidez, Tenley Mathews, Grayson Mathews, Tripp Mathews and Carson Mathews.

A proud grandfather and loving father, Carl had a quiet strength and a giving spirit. His natural instinct was to care for those around him, often putting others needs above his own. He loved his family with his entire heart. His children and grandchildren were the light of his life and he loved every moment spent with them. His love was steady, fierce, and unfailing – a foundation on which his family stands.

Carl leaves behind a large and loving family, including his siblings; Becky Johnson of Kansas City, Missouri; Kathy (Tom) Mallet of Malden; Jerry (Angie) Mathews of Malden; Richard (Carolyn) Mathews of Malden; Melba Mathews Green of Rector, Arkansas; Cassie Mathews of Poplar Bluff, Mike Mathews of St. Louis, MO, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Carl's life will be remembered not only in the legacy he leaves behind, but in the lives he touched and the love he gave. He will be deeply missed and forever held in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
