Obituary

William Louis Provance, Jr. "Sonny" went to be with our Lord on May 25, 2025, in Malden, Missouri. He was born in Clarkton, Missouri on June 22, 1934, to the late Bill & Mary Carman Provance.

He entered the Army in 1954 and was honorably discharged in 1956. He married Marie Peterson on February 20, 1955, in Hernando, Mississippi and he always called her "pretty little Marie Peterson".

Sonny, his wife and daughters, Donna and Connie, moved from Missouri to Odessa, Texas in 1959. His son Douglas was born there in 1961; they lived there until 2002. While in Odessa Sonny worked in several careers. He worked at Haliburton for 2 years, the Odessa Police Department for 7 years and then later, after receiving his Certifications for Communications, he went to work for Conoco Phillips for 17 years and retired from there. While in Odessa he became a Mason in the McFarland Lodge and remained a Mason for 50 years.

Also, while in Odessa he began playing music and started the Brand New Opera with Marie, this was a venue for his music and for fellow musicians around the Permian Basin. Sonny and Marie managed the opera for 25 years and helped hundreds of musicians learn their craft.

They returned to Missouri in 2002 and began working hard to remodel Mt. Gilead church into their private home. They named it "The Picking Parlor" in honor of Sonny's passion for gospel music and to serve the community. Sonny also worked as the Sexton of the Mt. Gilead Cemetery for 17 years.

He is survived by his wife Marie and children: Donna Provance of Campbell, Connie Hoover (Herb) of Malden, Douglas Provance (Robin) of Dexter. Grandchildren: Devon Chambliss, Kevin Smith, Jennifer Cannady, Elizabeth Godwin, Victoria Shotwell, Great Grandchildren: Elizabeth Grace, Presley Grace, Emma Katherine Smith, Elliot Smith, Trey Williamson, Tripp Cannady, Evey Cannady, James Godwin
