Obituary

Poplar Bluff ~ Melvin Gene Childress, 76, of Poplar Bluff passed away peacefully on Friday morning, January 31, 2020, at home. He was born in Holcomb, Missouri, on October 8, 1943, to Henry and Margie Childress. As a self-taught musician, he enjoyed singing and music, playing multiple instruments, although he played guitar most often. Singing and music filled his house as a regular past-time, and he fostered his love of singing and music to his children. He made many life-long friends playing country music with them in local establishments. Later, he transitioned to writing and playing gospel music.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wives Carolyn and Margaret, and daughter Theresa. As one of 7 children, he left behind his sister, Oneida Harding; ex-wife and caregiver, Lori Childress; four children, Sandra, Mikel, Melissa, and Jason; 9 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; and his dear friend Gerald Cook. His memorial service will be held from 5 to 7p.m. on Tuesday, February 4th, at First Assembly of God (Bluff First), 2518 Barron Road, Poplar Bluff, Missouri. 63901.
