Joann Hartsfield McCurter, age 93, of Bernie, Missouri, formerly of Malden, Missouri, died peacefully Sunday, August 2, 2026 at Winchester Assisted Living.

Born on July 6, 1933 in Burdette, Arkansas, Joann was the daughter of Clayton and Mamie (Lawfield) Hartsfield. She grew up in a large family whose bonds remained important to her throughout life.

Joann graduated from Clarkton High School in 1951. Soon afterward, she moved to Houston, Texas, where she worked for a year and a half. Love drew her back to Missouri's Bootheel. After serving his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, Billie "Bo" McCurter returned to his hometown of Malden. He and Joann became engaged and were united in marriage at First Southern Baptist Church in Malden. They shared a devoted marriage until Bo's death on January 17, 2017.

Joann was deeply rooted in the Malden community. She served as the elected Cotton Hill Township Collector from 1989 – 1995 and the elected City of Malden Collector 1970 to 1975. In those roles, she had the opportunity to meet and serve countless residents and formed a treasured, lifelong friendship with Jeanie Herbst.

Together, Joann and Bo owned and operated several small businesses in Malden, including the McCurter Auto Auction, a furniture store, Bo McCurter Mini Storage, and rental properties. Through their work and community involvement, they contributed to the vitality of the area.

Playing golf at the Malden Country Club and participating in tournaments elsewhere was a source of joy for Joann. Through the game, she created and deepened friendships that enriched her life.

As a woman of faith, Joann was a member of First Southern Baptist Church, Malden.

Joann loved and cared for her family throughout her life, cherishing the time spent with them. In addition, others cared for Joann with affection and love during her life, including her time at the Winchester property.

She is survived by her daughter Vonnie Jo Fielack, Malden; grandson Ross Beau Taylor, great grandson, Keaton Taylor; and great granddaughter Cordry Taylor, all of Willard, Missouri; former son-in-law Ray Fielack, Malden; sisters Mary Timmer, Eldon, Missouri and Betty Stegall, Dexter, Missouri; sisters-in-law Norma Hartsfield, Malden and Paula Hartsfield, Jefferson City; seven nieces and five nephews; and many other relatives and friends.

Joann was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bo; and her brothers, Alvis, Bobbie, Alton, Calvin, and George Hartsfield.

Visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Monday, August 10, 2026, at Landess Funeral Home in Malden. Funeral services will follow at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. Aulden LeBlanc officiating. Burial will be in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, Missouri.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Attn: Donor Services, 225 North Michigan Ave., Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601 in appreciation for the support provided during Bo’s illness.
