Barbara Fay Scales

Barbara Fay Scales, 76, passed peacefully from this life on June 1, 2026, in Malden, Missouri. She was born on July 1, 1949, in Gideon, Missouri, to the late Albert and Nellie (Phipps) Atnip. Barbara was the eighth child and youngest daughter in a large and loving family.

As the baby of the family, Barbara was treasured by her older brothers and sisters. They carried her, sang to her, and read to her so often that she did not begin walking until she was nearly a year and a half old. To them, she was more than a little sister—she was their baby doll, and she remained dearly loved throughout her life. A shy and gentle child, Barbara found comfort in family, stories, music, and the warmth of those around her. The close bonds formed in her childhood remained a source of strength throughout her life. Barbara carried that same kind and caring nature into adulthood. With a tender heart and quiet generosity, she made others feel valued through thoughtful words, a listening ear, and simple acts of kindness. Her gentle spirit touched many lives and brought comfort to family and friends. In 1968, Barbara married Garry Moore. They shared 23 years of marriage. From this union, three children were born: Sherry, Sheila, and Sabrina, who remained a cherished part of Barbara's life and legacy.

Known lovingly as Grandma Barb, she enjoyed sharing stories, offering encouragement, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She took great pride in watching her family grow and will be remembered for her warmth and caring spirit. Barbara’s life was a testament to kindness, quiet strength, and love. Barbara leaves behind a family who loved her dearly and memories that will be treasured for generations to come.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sister Shirley Coplin, her daughters, Sherry and husband, Chris Smith of Malden, Missouri, Sheila and Truitt Dowdy of Paragould, Arkansas, and Sabrina Weatherspoon of Piggott, Arkansas. Barbara is survived by her grandchildren: Matthew Smith, Edmond Quinton Hurst, Miranda Weatherspoon, Madison Quintana, Danielle Blair, and Lauren Smith. She also leaves behind her great-grandchildren: Mason Weatherspoon, Andrew Weatherspoon, Hadley Weatherspoon, Cayden Miller, Laykin Smith, Grayson Smith, Stella Pippins, Avery Smith, Delaney Smith and many nieces and nephews. She treasured the time and memories she shared with each of them.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Nellie (Phipps) Atnip; her sisters, Mary Lou Meese, Lois Hill, and Betty Capps; her brothers, Robert Atnip, Johnny Atnip and Jimmy Atnip; her husband, Don Scales; her granddaughter, Tiffany Weatherspoon; and her great-granddaughters, Olivia Weatherspoon and Jocelyn Weatherspoon.

Though her earthly journey has ended, her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew her.

Serving as pallbearers, Mason Carter Weatherspoon, Andrew Allen James Weatherspoon, Matthew Christopher Smith, Edmond Quinton Hurst, Thomas Christopher Smith and Truitt Dowdy.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., Friday, June 5, 2026 at the Landess Funeral Home in Malden, with services beginning at 11 a.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Everette Meese officiating. Burial will follow at Rosewood 1st Addition Cemetery in Malden.
